Giving All Children Confidence to Succeed in School

Jane, a local bus driver, and her husband, working part-time at a local retailer, didn’t make enough combined to afford the “extras” for their four children – winter coats, new shoes, calculators, backpacks. Jane told us that it was a blessing each August to know she could rely on UWWC for back to school items, giving her kids confidence to succeed in school. The support from UWWC wiped away any stigma her kids might have otherwise felt at the beginning of the school year when compared to their more affluent peers. This September, Jane’s youngest child started state college, following her siblings’ path of seeking higher education. Jane knows the significance of these academic accomplishments, and credits the work of UWWC in helping to make it attainable for her family.

Support for a family like Jane’s family illustrates this idea of interconnectedness at UWWC. Our annual back to school programs are largely a volunteer-driven cause. When we think about financial stability and how financial pressures can be overwhelming, it only compounds itself at the start of school when a child’s academic foundation is also at stake. We like nothing more than to ease the financial burden on families and enable all children to begin school with confidence. The hundreds of thank you notes from children we’ve helped speak volumes of what the impact is on our community and for our neighbors.
