UNITED WAY POLICIES

Grant Funding from United Way of Western Connecticut

In order to be relevant and effective in today’s fragile economy, UWWC is focusing on the growing ALICE  (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) population, households that live paycheck-to-paycheck and are above the Federal Poverty Level, yet below a localized cost-of-living budget. Almost 42,000 households in Western CT are ALICE, and struggling to pay for basic necessities, despite working hard every day.

Going forward, UWWC intends to impact the lives of our ALICE population, increase their financial stability and ultimately reduce the number of ALICE households in Western CT. United Way’s community grant process will be streamlined to fund programs and collaboratives that target specific issue areas that most impact ALICE households. To accomplish this, we must listen to ALICE, focus on targeted outcomes that will improve their lives, and measure the success for continual improvement. UWWC will look to achieve specific population outcomes in collaboration with multiple partners, all working together towards a common goal.

Our Board of Directors and local Community Councils have determined that UWWC will focus our support on three core areas: early childhood education, financial stability for households, and childhood obesity and healthy living within a greater context of serving ALICE households. Resources (financial and otherwise) will be delivered within a collective impact model to have a focused approach, deeper partnerships, larger grants and stronger measurement opportunities.  This work attracts additional funders who prioritize the larger impact and population outcomes of collective impact models. We believe by investing our resources differently, we will be more effective in our work and achieve greater results for our target ALICE population.

To inform this important work going forward, we need our community's input. UWWC staff and volunteers periodically host small community conversations with ALICE households, to learn what their aspirations are and what barriers exist to achieving them. We are seeking individuals who work hard and live paycheck-to-paycheck to come forward and share their experiences and recommendations for assistance. Anyone interested in advocating or being part of a community conversation, please contact Bridget Fox at bridget.fox@uwwesternct.org.
