Inspiring Youth to Engage in Volunteerism

The strength of our youth programs is, in part, the result of the hard work of our AmeriCorps YVC team leader, Morgan Greening. We were so pleased that Morgan was honored at this fall’s YVC Summit with the 2015 AmeriCorps Member of the Year Award for her commitment to service, professionalism, and excellent communication skills (photo, left). Well deserved, Morgan!

We sat down with one of our YVC members, Mackenzie Mitchell, to learn first hand why she loves volunteering and how she thinks it has impacted her. Mackenzie, in her own words:

“YVC has been an important influence on my character. YVC in particular has allowed me to see the little ways that one person can make a change. Whether it’s cleaning up a park, collecting donations, prepping for an event, or simply writing letters, each act of volunteerism has a positive effect on someone else. Being on the Youth Advisory Board has also allowed me to see the behind the scenes work that goes into projects. Planning takes organization, patience, and most of all team work.”

“My passion to help others will hopefully translate to my ultimate goal of becoming a doctor. Many of the projects that I have worked on through YVC, such as tutoring elementary school kids, have shown me how much I love little kids. Through school I have developed a particular liking to the biological sciences. Combining the two has led me to the goal of becoming a pediatric oncologist.”

“YVC has been an instrumental part of my high school experience and will certainly be something I will never forget!”
