Danbury United Way Back-To-School Drive Valued at $46,800

More than 230 children were outfitted with supplies and necessities

DANBURY, Conn. (September 13, 2017) — United Way of Western Connecticut (UWWC) is proud to announce the wrap-up of its annual Back-To-School Program in Danbury, which served 234 children this year and represents an investment of $46,800 into the greater Danbury community.

This year, Danbury’s Hayestown School on Tamarack Avenue graciously hosted UWWC’s Back-To-School Distribution Day on August 16. Thanks to the generosity of individuals and corporations in Danbury, this UWWC program continues to help children from struggling families start the new school year on a positive note with a new backpack filled with school supplies, toiletry items and a gift card for clothing purchases. This program is one of United Way’s signature initiatives that helps children from ALICE® households (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and alleviates a very real strain for families living paycheck-to-paycheck.

“The children exude pure excitement when they come in to pick up their backpacks,” said Kimberly Morgan, UWWC Chief Executive Officer. “Their enthusiasm for the new school year is fueled by being fully prepared with all the materials they need, allowing them to start the school year with confidence. Our Back-To-School Program addresses a real financial concern for their families and a little extra breathing room in their household budgets at the start of the school year, which can be a busy and stressful time.”

Programs like UWWC’s Back-To-School could not exist without the support of our community. We are deeply grateful to volunteers Kathy Shook and Patty Moses for their dedication to providing organizational and logistical support to keep the Back-To-School Program in Danbury running smoothly. The success of this program would not have been possible without the support of donors in our community, including private individual donors and the following greater Danbury companies:
