How to help those impacted by Hurricane Harvey in the Gulf region

Like so many of you, we are heartbroken at the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey to residents of Texas, Louisiana and the Gulf region. If you have friends or loved ones who are impacted by the storm, please know our thoughts and prayers are with them.  We encourage people in the affected areas to contact 2-1-1 for local resources such as shelter, food and clean/potable water. Wait times are longer than usual, but calls are being answered as quickly as possible.

While the rain is tapering off in some areas, there’s still uncertainty about rivers and dams in the area, and the exact extent of damage remains a great unknown at this point. But we can tell you how United Ways are responding and collaborating with other organizations and agencies to serve those affected by this storm. For information on how the United Way network is responding on the ground, visit https://www.unitedway.org/the-latest/press/hurricane-harvey.

In this time of crisis, we know there is a desire to help alleviate the suffering we see, and reassure those who are facing a continued threat from this terrible storm. Our colleagues at 2-1-1 Connecticut and the United Way of Connecticut have compiled a resource directory for more information about disaster relief efforts and ways to help those reeling from Harvey:

In addition, United Way Worldwide is launching a national United Way Harvey Relief Fund, accessible via www.unitedway.org/harvey. The Harvey Relief Fund is a response to individual and corporate donors who are looking for one, simplified place to give and impact the entire affected area. 100% of all money raised will be distributed to the affected United Ways, with no individual donations going toward administration and overhead at UWW. Additionally credit card processors have waived their fees in association with this fund.

While Harvey has been unprecedented in its devastation, we know that the outpouring of support for all those affected will be greater in its strength and spirit. We will update our social media and blog posting to keep you apprised of relief efforts as we move forward, together, as one nation.

Regards,
Kim Morgan

United Way of Western Connecticut
