ALICE Enrichment Fund

Studies show that out-of-school activities—like sports, music, and robotics—can improve health and wellness, boost academic achievement, and build social and emotional skills in the children who participate.

Unfortunately, children in low-income families don’t participate in activities at the same rate as more affluent children. Their parents simply don’t have the money left in their budgets after paying for housing, utilities, transportation, and food.

In fact, only about 44% of children in homes with $25,000 to $49,900 in annual income participate in sports, compared to 69% of children whose parents earn $100,000 or more per year.

To make sure that these low-income children can reap the benefits of out-of-school activities, United Way’s ALICE Enrichment fund pays up to $300 per child per year, to a maximum of $900 per family, to cover the cost of activities.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

  • United Way provides funding to 8 regional partners (see below). They administer the funds to families in all 15 towns that we serve.
  • Parents apply directly to the regional partner on behalf of their children. Some documentation of family income will be required.
  • Payments are made directly to the provider of the activity, to cover the program’s cost, up to $300 per child per year.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

820 children have benefitted since the program’s launch in 2017

983 activities have been funded

$189,469 has been distributed to children in our region
