Press Release: 17th Annual Business to Books Read-a-Thon Benefits Stamford Elementary School Students

United Way of Western Connecticut and local businesses work together for early literacy and community engagement

STAMFORD, Conn. (April 3, 2019) — United Way of Western Connecticut is once again partnering with Stamford Public Schools for the 17th annual Business to Books Read-a-Thon. Next week, volunteers from the local business community will visit six Stamford elementary schools and read to more than 1,100 children.

The purpose of the Business to Books initiative is to promote literacy and enhance public education by increasing community volunteerism in the schools. Employees of the following companies will read to children:

  • Holland & Knight
  • Legg Mason
  • NBC Universal
  • Pitney Bowes
  • Shipman & Goodwin
  • Synchrony

“The volunteers and the kids really love this event every year. The kids love it because someone new and interesting is reading to them, and the corporate volunteers really love getting out from behind their desks and doing something different and fun,” said United Way CEO, Kimberly Morgan. “There’s nothing more rewarding than engaging young children in the love of reading aloud and telling stories. We’re thankful to the teachers and staff of the Stamford Public Schools for being so open to having volunteers in their building reading with their students.”

For more information about Business to Books, please contact Nicole Granskog, Stamford’s Community Impact Coordinator at United Way of Western Connecticut at 203.883.6034 or nicole.granskog@uwwesternct.org. The press is invited to attend schools during the volunteer visits.
