Please join us in welcoming our new Project Manager, Sofie Sandone to Stamford Cradle to Career(SC2C! Sofie joins us from CT Against Gun Violence, a non-profit organization whose focus is to identify, develop, and promote passage of legislation designed to enhance gun safety. She spearheaded lobbying efforts to strengthen CT gun laws, and organized events such as fundraisers, movie screenings and conferences. She also supported state-funded programs such as Project Longevity, which focuses on reducing violence in the three major cities: New Haven, Bridgeport and Hartford by working with young individuals who are known to police.
We are excited to welcome Sofie into her new position as the Project Manager for our Stamford Cradle to Career Initiative. She takes on th role of supporting the internal and external communication of the SC2C initiative, coordinating the Community Action Networks (CANs), facilitating the planning activities of the community partners aligned with the SC2C priority work and providing administrative support for assigned meetings.
Students in Stamford Nominated for National Merit Scholarship
Amazing news in Stamford! Stamford Public Schools (SPS) announced that 10 seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Academy of Information Technology & Engineering(AITE) Seniors Annabel Devault, Alexander Graf, and Ashneal Powell; Stamford High School Seniors Corey DeCamp, Mark Gjuraj, and Emily Wharmby; and Westhill High School (WHS) Seniors Sophia Ciokajlo, Koshik Mahapatra, Reshmi Ranjith and Nikhil Tungaturthy; are among the 34,000 students nationwide recognized for their noteworthy academic accomplishments.
In September, the district announced three semi-finalists WHS Seniors Sarthak Behl, Bailey Paulk and Erica Shaulson, who are among the top 16,000 students nationwide and the Commended Students placed among the top scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Stamford Cradle to Career wants to commemorate the invaluable prowess and achievements of these young scholars. We celebate them and highlight the impact that they are surely going to make in their prospective careers and future endeavors. News such as this ties in with our mission to ensure that all youth succeed in education, career and life by celebrating not only our youth but SPS for the importance they place on effectively preparing our kids for a thriving future.
Two Community Action Networks Prepare to Launch Action Plans
Our Community Action Networks have been hard at work these past few months cultivating implementation strategies for action plans in the next few months. The dedication and commitment to the vision of our collaborative has set the foundation for the long-term positive impact that this work will have on the Stamford community.
Action plans have been approved for Kindergarten-Readiness and Early Grade Reading CANs. K-Readiness has created a professional development action plan that will be implementing two educational/training workshops for Kindergarten and preschool teachers, one in November and the other one scheduled for April 2018.
Early Grade Reading CAN members initially shared what they are doing to improve early literacy through their organizations and how they can help support and expand these endeavors.They are now working with Chester Addison Community Center, Boys & Girls Club of Stamford and also trying to expand to other centers to replicate successful actionable projects that will benefit Stamford youth and SPS.
