Stamford Cradle to Career recently held its biannual advisory board meeting. Participants at this meeting include top-level community leaders who provide strategic advice and support for the Cradle to Career initiative. See our 2017 Community Report for a complete list of members.
The meeting highlights and reviews SC2C’s goals and accomplishments in the past year. Some accomplishments discussed include the successful Go Before You Show kickoff, an awareness campaign about prenatal care and maternal health, as well as increased administration of the Preschool Kindergarten Transition Summary (PKTS), which is a screening tool that facilitates placement of preschool children into kindergarten.
The next time our advisory board members will get together will be at our 2018 Annual Convening. Open to the public, the SC2C Annual Convening will be held at the UConn Stamford campus on Thursday, December 6 from 8:30-11:30am.
Early Grade Reading Strategies That Work PD Workshop
The Early Grade Reading Community Action Network (CAN) has completed another successful PD workshop on reading strategies. Thanks to Natalie Elder, Director for School Improvement & Professional Development and Co-Chair of the Early Grade Reading (EGR) CAN and Lisa Armstrong, Curriculum Associate for Elementary Literacy and EGR CAN member, we had another successful workshop with almost 50 attendees.
The focus of the workshop was on reading comprehension. If readers can read words, but do not understand the content, they are not really reading. Research has shown that some strategies for improving reading comprehension include monitoring comprehension, using graphic and semantic organizers and answering questions. These and other strategies to improve reading comprehension have been shared with staffers from various community centers and in-school partners to decrease the summer slide.
Stamford Cradle to Career Awarded Two Grants
Stamford Cradle to Career is fortunate to have received two grants. The New Canaan Community Foundation has awarded SC2C a $6,000 grant through its 2018 funding cycle. In addition, the Rotary Club of Stamford presented $10,000 for the current fiscal year 2017-2018 to SC2C.
This funding will support Stamford Cradle to Career’s work which is based on collectively aligning community resources to ensure equity and excellence in education, for every child, from cradle to career.
