United Way Mobilizes More than 200 Volunteers on Annual Stamford Day of Action

Corporate volunteers engaged in a variety of projects throughout Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. (October 19, 2016) — United Way of Western Connecticut mobilized more than 200 corporate volunteers from 15 companies on Thursday, October 6, 2016 in projects at 10 nonprofit agencies across the City of Stamford.

The day began with a kick-off breakfast hosted by Nestlé Waters North America and a short program from United Way of Western Connecticut. The Hon. David Martin, Mayor of City of Stamford, addressed many of the day’s volunteers with a message of appreciation on behalf of grateful agencies and city residents.

Volunteers from Stamford companies completed projects at nonprofits across the community such as  landscaping, painting, career workshops and planting gardens. These projects can potentially save the organizations thousands of dollars in costly, but necessary maintenance projects, enabling valuable and limited resources to be used for direct services to the organization’s clients.

All new this year, UWWC led a community-wide project in support of early grade literacy. More than 50 volunteers gathered at Nestlé Waters North America to build literacy kits, which United Way named Wannaread Academy, filled with donated books and reading supplies. More than 300 literacy kits were assembled and distributed to Stamford second grade students at KT Murphy Elementary School, Davenport Ridge Elementary School and Roxbury Elementary School. The Wannaread Academy literacy kits are fun and engaging ways to encourage reading, deepen children’s reading experience and help students build their home libraries.

“Day of Action in Stamford is a prefect example of United Way’s unique position in the community to bring together agencies, corporations and volunteers to work together toward a common goal,” said Kim Morgan, CEO of United Way of Western Connecticut. “Much of our work to help the most vulnerable in our community could not be done without the valuable contribution of volunteers and commitment from socially responsible corporations, both through Day of Action and throughout the year.”
