United Way of Western Connecticut and the Woman’s Club of Greater New Milford Invite the Community to Come Stuff the Gazebo

The two organizations are teaming up to collect enough food to provide a full Thanksgiving dinner to 300 New Milford area families in need

NEW MILFORD, Conn. (October 27, 2016) — United Way of Western Connecticut (UWWC) is proud to partner with the Woman’s Club of Greater New Milford to help provide a full Thanksgiving dinner to New Milford area families in need. The two organizations are calling on the community to help Stuff the Gazebo on the New Milford Green with non-perishable food items on Saturday, November 5, 2016, from 10 am - 3 pm.

The community is asked to donate non-perishable food items for Thanksgiving dinners, including: boxed mashed potatoes, stuffing mix, pie crust mix* and canned pie filling*, canned yams*, canned cranberry sauce*, canned/jarred gravy, canned vegetables, and cream soups*. (* most needed items)
Monetary donations will also be accepted for the purchase of turkeys.

“United Way of Western Connecticut is proud to partner again this year with the Woman’s Club of Greater New Milford collect food to provide Thanksgiving meals for families in the New Milford area,” said Kimberly Morgan, CEO of United Way of Western Connecticut. “A simple donation of food is extremely meaningful to a family struggling financially, particularly at this time of year.”

A statewide United Way report on struggling households released last week  indicates that 22% of New Milford households have incomes above the Federal poverty level, yet below a localized survival budget, a population United Way refers to as ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). Combined with 6% of households in poverty, a full 28% of households in New Milford experience financial hardship.
